Photographs of the image of Our Lady of Montserrat
by Lluís Casals
From April 25 to June 8, 2025
This exhibition presents the photographs taken by the renowned photographer Lluís Casals, commissioned by the Abbey of Montserrat in 2001 on the occasion of the radiographic studies and restoration of the image of Our Lady.
The sculpture, of Romanesque origin and made of poplar wood in the late 12th or early 13th century, stands out for its expressiveness and delicacy. Over the centuries, the image has been repainted several times, gradually acquiring the dark tone that characterizes it today.
The title of the exhibition, Virgo serena, refers to the serene expression on the face of the Virgin, as already perceived by 14th-century pilgrims, according to the Llibre Vermell de Montserrat (Red Book of Montserrat).
This exhibition arrives in Vilafranca as part of the celebration of the Millennium of the founding of the Monastery of Montserrat.
